THANK YOU

Greetings, Parents!

This is just a short message to say how very pleased I was by the way that the UK trip went this year and how you, as parents, can be very proud of the way your sons behaved themselves. They really were wonderful ambassadors for Japan, Tokai and for your families.

They participated wholeheartedly in the lessons and afternoon activities and every member of staff at Marlborough Summer School told me how much they were a positive influence and how pleasant and polite they were at all times. They joined in the evening activities nicely and made lots of friends with the other kids at the Summer School. They helped and looked after each other too and had a very nice group energy. Their two leaders, Issei and Kensei were very helpful in that respect.

Every single boy behaved with decorum at all times and they were considerate to those around them when in public. In fact there were no problems of any sort with behaviour during the time we were in the UK. On the trip to London they were careful to keep together and when we visited museums and travelled on public transport they were quiet and considerate of where they were. When we visited the Imperial War Museum and Peace Garden they were respectful and appropriately thoughtful. Finally, for the first year ever, nobody lost or forgot anything!

Perhaps most importantly, they were very lucky to have had such kind and welcoming host families. In every case, these families did many extra things with them such as taking them on trips and so on and the boys were appreciative and showed their gratitude and affection for their host families. It was very moving seeing them say farewell and I know from talking to the boys on the bus to the airport, that they felt the warmth of this welcome into an English home. In the families with small children they bonded with and played with them and made happy memories not just for themselves but for the whole family. The host families all told me how much they enjoyed having a Tokai boy to stay and some have already told me that they would like one next year. I hope that the boys will all send some sort of card or thank you message to the families to let them know how they feel. I also hope that they appreciate how their teachers Mr Bond and Mr Yokoi have given of their family time to support this project.

One of the highlights of the trip was the Japan Corner where the boys shared some things about Japan with the other participants at the Summer School. They did a great job with this and I hope that they were happy to see how interested everybody was to find out about Japan. This was a joy to watch, as people from the UK and many other countries crowded around their tent and the boys wholeheartedly showed off all sorts of items to the crowd. By doing this they could feel how people are interested in, enjoy and appreciate their culture and they did a great job of building a positive image for Japan in Marlborough. The same can be said for the day they went to St. John's Academy and met the students there.

I spoke to the boys on the bus back to Heathrow Airport and every single one of them told me that they had enjoyed the programme and had a good time in England. I personally very much enjoyed getting to know them over the two weeks. They are all so different in personality and I felt that they had all grown up in the time they were in the UK. I hope that they spread this positive energy, and stories of their trip, back in Japan, particularly in their English lessons. They have experienced firsthand the power and pleasure of using English to communicate with people in the wider world beyond the shores of Japan world and I hope this gives them a boost in motivation to them as they progress to higher levels of language study. I also hope that the boys will keep in touch with their host families, with myself and with the friends they made on the trip.

I said this was going to be a short message but it has becoming a long one!

What I really want to say to you, the boys and the Tokai teachers who accompanied the group, is a big THANK YOU! A project like this is so important, as we build bridges between Japan and the wider world. The success of the program, thanks to you all means that we can continue to do this.

Now that your son is back in Japan, please give your him a big pat on the back. He did you proud! Give yourself one too. You've brought up a gentleman.

Warmest Regards,

Patrick

Kensei at Windsor Castle

Kensei spent the day out at Windsor on his last day, many thanks to his host family, Peter and Pauline for taking him there.

Tadayuki and Kenta - Masterchefs!

Today Tadayuki and Kenta cooked their home stay families Japanese food! The boys had the idea a few days ago and organised it together. They got all the ingredients and as they hadn't cooked before, used Google for advice! We really enjoyed sushi rice with salmon, crayfish and prawn with soy sauce and also miso soup with noodles and soya. They also made wasabi sauce, but it was even too hot for them!
We were very impressed with the effort and thought Tadayuki and Kenta put into the meal.  All the adults enjoyed it as did all the children aged 5, 3, 2 & 1.  (Thanks to Amy for this blog post).

Last Night Party

Last night with our Tokai boys.  Tonight Yujin’s host family (The Kelly’s) hosted The Golders, The Nicholls’, The Nelson’s and The O’Reilly’s for a farewell bbq.  Lots of football - yet another impromptu *show* from Bea and Nancy (!) and a lot of happy memories.

Tadayuki at the TOP of Marlborough!

Tadayuki with his host family at the top of St. Peter's Church Tower. What a great view. Thanks to Amy for this picture!

What a WONDERFUL Group!

It was an emotional farewell today. Thanks to Lee for these great pictures taken just before they got on on the bus. The boys are safely on the plane and are now on their way home. Heartfelt thanks to all the host families who made the experience so amazing for the boys and thanks also to the boys for really making the most of it.

A Trip to Bath

Thans to Hugh and Angela, Daiki and Akihiro were able to go to visit Bath - and look! Sushi!

The End of the Adventure!

Hiroki and Naoto went rock climbing on their last day in England! What an adventure!

And pancakes for breakfast on their final morning.

Yujin's Last Day in the UK

Thanks to Helen and Jonathan for these lovely pictures taken on Yujin's last day in England. I spoke to Yujin on the bus on the way home and he said how much he had enjoyed his time with the Kelly family. Happy memories sightseeing with Jago, Bea and Rufus.

Akinori's Homestay Life

Akinori has had a wonderful time here in the UK. Here are some pictures very kindly sent to us by his host mother, Sarah. Because he is musical, we paired him with a musical family. Here you can see him practicing his violin, which he brough from Japan with him, with Andrew, his host father.

Learning about the mysterious English sport of cricket!

One evening, Akinori made sushi for his host family.

A Show in the Park

The Japanese boys were entertained by Bea and Nancy who put on a magic and theatre show specially for them! Thanks to Helen Kelly for sending us these pictures of the show. The little girls learned some Japanese words (for 'cat' and 'dog' and how to count to ten). Well done!

A Forest Barbecue

Hiroki, Naoto, Kenta and Tadayuki went with their host families for a barbecue in the big forest near to Marlborough. What a great time! Making the most of the glorious sunshine, a few home stay families took the opportunity to catch up over a bbq supper. The boys mixed in wonderfully with all the other children, of many differing ages, enjoying the outdoors whilst practising their English. Climbing trees, football, toasting marshmallows, playing with the dogs and a BBQ supper.

A Blog Post from Tadayuki's Family

We wanted Tadayuki to learn about family life here in the UK, so on the Saturday morning before the battle re-enactment, we took him to meet our parents.
First stop was Doug's parents home for a cup of tea in the garden. We also fed the fish (trout and grayling) as the River Kennet happens to run along the bottom of their garden. Then it was over to their allotment to show Tadayuki how we grow our fruit and vegetables.

Next stop was Amy's parents home for cake in their garden. Tadayuki really enjoyed the lemon cake and ginger beer. This evening Tadayuki came home with several bags of bands for loom bands, asking if we knew how to make them - we did not!
But after a quick shout out to another home stay family, a Google search and a YouTube instructional video we were well on our way.
We spent the evening creating loom bands, watching the Commonwealth Games with home made pizza and ginger beer (Tadayuki's new favourite drink).

The students on the Multi-Sports activity enjoyed a game of softball!
